Odoo 20: the most important new features for SMEs

In short: Odoo 20 was released in September 2026. The biggest changes: AI agents that create and send records themselves, an offline mode, simpler access rights, smarter vendor bills and paying bills from Odoo. On top of that there is plenty of news in manufacturing, planning, eCommerce and marketing. Below are the features that matter most to Dutch and Belgian SMEs.

Every autumn Odoo releases a new major version, and every year the question is the same: what's in it for me, and should I upgrade now? With Odoo 20 the answer is "yes" more often than with earlier versions. There are big steps in AI and automation, and many small improvements that save time every day. We went through the official release notes and picked the points we see most often with our customers.

1. AI agents that actually do things

Odoo 19 introduced AI agents, but they mostly gave answers. In Odoo 20 they also carry out tasks:

  • Create, update and send records: an agent can, for example, draft a quotation, create a task or send a document.
  • Start automatically: agents can run from scheduled actions, so even when nobody asks a question.
  • Questions about files: ask questions about an attached PDF or spreadsheet.
  • Voice input and buttons: answers can contain buttons and default prompts, and you can dictate instead of typing.
  • MCP connection: Odoo 20 can talk to external AI tools through the Model Context Protocol.

Note: all AI features in Odoo 20 require IAP credits. Include that in your budget. Want to know more about AI in Odoo? Read Agentic AI in your ERP: what is hype and what already works?

2. Working offline

Odoo 20 has an offline mode. You can create, edit, archive and delete records without an internet connection. Changes are synchronised as soon as you are back online. Useful for technicians, warehouse staff and anyone working on location.

3. Simpler access rights

Record rules are going away. Instead, each access right gets its own domain (filter). That makes it easier to see who is allowed to do what. Do you have customisations with your own record rules? Have them checked before the upgrade.

4. Accounting: less typing, more control

  • Bill line prediction: on vendor bills, Odoo fills in the product, account, tax and analytic distribution itself, based on earlier bills.
  • Paying from Odoo: where your bank supports it, you pay vendor bills directly from Odoo through a payment initiation (PISP) connection.
  • Parent accounts instead of account groups: the chart of accounts gets simpler, and account codes are no longer mandatory.
  • Bank consistency: entries on bank accounts must come from bank transactions, with clearer messages when validating statements.
  • Prices incl./excl. VAT: per quotation, purchase order or invoice you switch between prices including and excluding VAT.
  • Duplicate invoices: better duplicate detection, with warning levels.

5. Field Service moves into Planning

The separate Field Service app goes away. Its features now live in Planning: a live technician map, route planning, travel fees (fixed or by distance), customer equipment with maintenance contracts, worksheets and customer ratings after a visit. Do you use Field Service today? Then the upgrade changes how you work.

6. Manufacturing

  • Continuous production on work orders, and splitting ongoing manufacturing orders.
  • A single "Produce" button and a new Kanban view for manufacturing orders.
  • Comparing bills of materials and replacing components via "Used In".
  • Flexible consumption is the default, and lot and serial numbers are generated automatically on closing.

7. Projects

Projects get roles with team members. The old profitability report has been replaced by new budget and margin reports. You can create a project straight from an opportunity, and you can assign tasks to portal users who follow a project.

8. eCommerce and sales

  • B2B and B2C on one site: taxes included or excluded per pricelist.
  • Automatically unpublish and republish products based on stock.
  • Customers choose a preferred delivery date and request returns through the portal.
  • Abandoned cart follow-up via WhatsApp.

9. Marketing and CRM

Marketing Automation gets a drag-and-drop workflow builder, webhooks and AI help with setting up campaigns. In CRM you choose per salesperson how leads are distributed (always in rotation, with a limit, or out of rotation), and lead generation now uses Dun & Bradstreet.

10. Other useful improvements

  • Sign: automated signature requests with fixed or role-based signers, and itsme verification (interesting for Belgium).
  • Documents: let AI rename files, request multiple files in one request, and payslips in their own folder.
  • Attendances: a photo at check-in and automatic check-out.
  • Usability: drag several records at once in list and Kanban views, and a refreshed mobile layout.

Should you upgrade to Odoo 20 now?

If you use Odoo Online, the upgrade usually follows automatically. If you use Odoo.sh or your own server, and you have customisations or integrations? Then plan the upgrade deliberately, and test on a copy of your database first. Pay particular attention to your own record rules, integrations through the old external API, and use of Field Service. Our step-by-step plan is in Upgrading Odoo to the latest version.

Frequently asked questions

When was Odoo 20 released?

Odoo 20 was released in September 2026, around Odoo Experience in Brussels.

Are the AI features in Odoo 20 free?

No. All AI features in Odoo 20 require IAP credits, on top of your licence.

Will my customisations still work after upgrading to Odoo 20?

That depends on what was built. Your own record rules, integrations through the old external API and changes to Field Service almost always need to be checked. So always test the upgrade on a copy first.
